MP Betty Namboze hospitalised |
The
Uganda Human Rights Commission has directed the Inspector General of Police to
release Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze so that she can be able to travel
to India to get special treatment.
According
to the letter, the commission warned that “if anything happens to Nambooze as a
result of delay in her medical treatment, it would raise legitimate questions
as to how she was treated while in police custody.”
“Furthermore,
the consequences will be grave to the embarrassment of Uganda police force and
to the entire country,”.
On Wednesday 13th June,
Nambooze was arrested by police from her home in Mukono, detained at Jinja Road
Police Station and later transferred to Nagalama Police Station where she
recorded a statement on allegations that she “made unflattering comments about
slain Arua MP Ibrahim Abiriga.”
Her
health deteriorated and a doctor recommended that she should be transferred to
a hospital as she was in too much pain and was at a risk of suffering
neurogenic shock.
She
was driven to Kiruddu Hospital from where she is receiving medical treatment to
date under the close watch of police officers as she is still under detention.
Prior
to her arrest, Nambooze was due to travel to India for further checkup, having
undergone a spinal operation back in December, following the injuries she
sustained during the Age Limit constitutional amendment debate in parliament.
