Makerere University Academic Staff Association has
called for a General Assembly to discuss harassment and witch-hunt of its leaders
by university managers.
Associate Prof. Edward Nector Mwavu, the MUASA Vice
Chairperson, says that a decision was reached during an executive meeting held
yesterday. On Tuesday, the University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nawangwe
wrote to MUASA chairperson Dr. Deus Muhwezi Kamunyu directing him to stop
publicly making allegations against officers and organs of the University.
But Prof. Mwavu says the Vice-Chancellor acted in error
by writing the letter directing it to the Chairperson of MUASA as a lecturer
not a leader of staff.
During the MUASA executive meeting, members took exception and demanded that issues raised by the Vice Chancellor are addressed to the Office of the Chairperson of MUASA since they relate to his official work.

According to Prof. Mwavu, the general MUASA membership
is protected by Article 29 of the Constitution of Uganda which deals with
freedom of expression, association and academic freedoms which must be respected.
