Nurses under the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council have
called off their planned strike that was scheduled to start tomorrow.
This was announced today following the release of the new
medical worker's salary structure and the drafting of a Collective Bargaining
Agreement-CBA between government and all workers' unions.The nurses had threatened
to strike in protest of lack of information on the new medical worker's salary
scale and the lack of CBA.
Justus Cherop Chiplangat, President, UNMU says that the
government will meet trade unions once a year to discuss a way forward on all
the pending unfulfilled demands of workers.
Starting the next financial year 2018/2019, nurses will
receive salary increment. Nurses at certificate level that were previously
earning 410,000 shillings will get 600,000 shillings, Diploma and degree level
will earn Shs.1.2m from 710,000 shillings.
Emmanuel Mufumbar, General Secretary UNMU says that following
the increment of salaries and the signing of the agreement, they will also push
for an increment in allowances.
