Uganda National
Examinations Board has started training teachers from lower classes about Early
Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA). Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) is an
individually administered oral assessment of the most basic foundation skills
for literacy acquisition in early grades.
In Kamwenge, the training
targeting over one hundred primary teachers across the district is underway.
The training was yesterday launched at the district headquarters before
relocating to Kicwamba primary school to cater for Kitagwenda schools.
Tomorrow, the same training will be carried at Nkoma primary school in Kibale
East constituency.
Twesigye Narris an assessor from UNEB says that reading
and writing skills can be achieved by using simple instruction materials. He
explains that during the training teachers are encouranged to emphasize the use
of local languages spoken by the community to help learners understand easily.
According to Twesigye, the training of teachers in
Kamwenge was provoked by the 2017 research in Kamwenge district which revealed
that learners in lower primary schools were unable to read in both their mother
language and English.
