Police in Kamwenge is holding 18 people who were
rounded up in bars. The victims were apprehended during police patrol in bars.
Yesterday, police in Kamwenge town rounded up bars
which were operating in the early hours. Due to the rate of crime in Kamwenge,
the district security committee headed by the RDC Elijah Biryabarema who has
since been transferred to Ntoroko passed a resolution prohibiting bars from
operating in the morning hours.
According to the resolution, all bars in Kamwenge
district are supposed to open after lunch and close at midnight. Despite the
resolution, bar owners have defied it and operate 24 hours of the day.
As a result, police led by Didas Byaruhanga the
District Police Commander mounted an operation and arrested all people who were
found drinking alcohol as opposed to the stipulated time.
Byaruhanga says that those who were arrested will be
arraigned in court to answer charges of defying lawful orders.
