Kasese
district is struggling with increasing cases of vehicle number plate thefts.
According to police statistics, at least ten people have reported the theft of
their number plates in a space of less than a month.
The
Kasese District Police Commander, Patrick Byaruhanga says the habit could have
been imported into the district by some rogue youths from Kampala.
He says they have so far arrested two suspects in connection to the theft,
saying they will charge them with malicious damage of property and theft.
He
identifies the suspects as Patrick Kyaligonza, a resident of Nyakasanga Ward in
Kasese Municipality and Kapafu Thembo, a resident of Mahango Sub County.
Thembo says he started stealing number plates about two weeks ago and had managed to fleece about Shillings 400,000 from his victims by the times he was picked up.The Kasese District LC V chairperson, Geoffrey Sibendire Bigogo, whose vehicle plate number was also taken, says the theft is an indicator of insecurity and broad day criminality in the country.
