MP Betty Namboze hospitalised

The Uganda Human Rights Commission has directed the Inspector General of Police to release Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze so that she can be able to travel to India to get special treatment.
According to the letter, the commission warned that “if anything happens to Nambooze as a result of delay in her medical treatment, it would raise legitimate questions as to how she was treated while in police custody.”
“Furthermore, the consequences will be grave to the embarrassment of Uganda police force and to the entire country,”.
On Wednesday 13th June, Nambooze was arrested by police from her home in Mukono, detained at Jinja Road Police Station and later transferred to Nagalama Police Station where she recorded a statement on allegations that she “made unflattering comments about slain Arua MP Ibrahim Abiriga.”
Her health deteriorated and a doctor recommended that she should be transferred to a hospital as she was in too much pain and was at a risk of suffering neurogenic shock.
She was driven to Kiruddu Hospital from where she is receiving medical treatment to date under the close watch of police officers as she is still under detention.
Prior to her arrest, Nambooze was due to travel to India for further checkup, having undergone a spinal operation back in December, following the injuries she sustained during the Age Limit constitutional amendment debate in parliament.

Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate Esther Nahirya has charged former Bundibugyo Woman MP Hon Harriet Ntabazi, with 3 counts relating to forgery of academic documents.
The prosecutors from the Office of the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) led by Wilberforce Mutebule allege that between December 2015 and October 2016, Ntabaazi knowingly uttered a false UACE certificate both to the Electoral Commission and to investigators from the IGG’s office, purporting that the said certificate had been issued by UNEB which is not true.
IGG says her investigations later established that the purpose of Ntabazi’s actions was to be nominated to contest for election on the seat of Bundibugyo district woman MP.The former MP denied all the charges.
Court further heard from Ntabazi’s lawyers led by Mwesigye Humphrey that she had been summoned to appear at IGG’s office yesterday for further investigations but she was instead whisked away to court.
Ntabazi asked court to release her on bail pending the hearing of her case. She presented 3 sureties including her brother Suiz Kyomuhendo a University lecturer.
Court ruled in her favour, releasing her on a Shs 5 million cash bail.

More than 800 dogs have been vaccinated in the ongoing mass vaccination against rabies in Hoima Municipality. Another 189 dogs have also been killed from the four divisions of Kahoora, Mparo, Busiisi and Bujumbura in the municipality over the last three days.
Hoima Municipal Veterinary officer Swalleh Kajuma says those killed were stray dogs that had been abandoned by their owners.  Kajuma says this year the Municipal veterinary department intends to vaccinate 1500 dogs.
The exercise comes at the backdrop of several attacks by stray dogs on civilians in the municipality. One of the stray dogs attacked and injured eight people in the villages of Kijogoro and Kyatiri in Mirya Sub County, Masindi district, while another injured woman in Kyabalyanga cell in Bujumbura division.
Kajuma says after the vaccination exercise, which runs up to the end of the month, the Veterinary department will embark on a house to house monitoring to verify whether all dogs are safe to keep in homes.  He adds that persons who will be found with unvaccinated dogs will be arrested and charged.

Voice of Kamwenge

The Buwama Sub County Chief in Mpigi District is on the spot for mismanaging money from the issuance of birth certificates.

Sarah Nakandi is accused of failing to account for the funds she has been collecting.  A person in need of a birth certificate at the sub-county headquarters is charged 10,000-20,000 shillings.
Cossy Nakabazzi, the Buwama Sub County deputy speaker, says that several certificates have been issued, but Nakandi has refused to account for the funds.
Peter Kagiri, the Sango Parish councilor, says that since the certificate fees boost local revenue collection, service delivery in the area has been affected.

However Nakandi accepts that she collects the money, but it is spent on paying for the services of an office attendant.
Michael Lutalo, the Mpigi District Assistant CAO, says that fees must be paid to the treasurer. He promised to investigate the matter.
